The 3-Step Skincare Routine You Didn't Know You Needed

The 3-Step Skincare Routine You Didn't Know You Needed

I dealt with acne the majority of my teenage years - me and everyone else, right?

Unfortunately in the 90s skincare was primarily focused on clearing acne (by any means necessary) and less focus on overall skin health.

While I appreciated that there were solutions, like the infamous Proactiv line (am I the only one that tried them?), there were so many missing gaps.  Which is why things didn't work out all that great then.

I was using products with no real understanding of how it works and what it's potentially doing for my skin.

Sooo...you're in luck because I'm going to be breaking down how you can create a skincare routine that works but doesn’t have to be complicated (because let's be honest with ourselves, time is limited).

Oh and if reading is not your jam, I created an entire YouTube video all about it.

Building a skincare routine that works for YOU

Step 1: Cleanse Daily

No matter your skin type, cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine. A good cleanser removes dirt, oil, and impurities, leaving your skin refreshed and ready for the next steps.

Oily skin: Look for a gel-based cleanser that contains niacinamide to control excess oil.
Dry skin: Opt for a creamy, hydrating cleanser to maintain moisture balance.
Combination skin: Start with a gel-based cleanser.  If it is too drying for the drier areas, swap to a hydrating cleanser or unfortunately you will have to incorporate both cleansers to address each separate skin type.
Normal skin: Stick with something gentle to maintain your skin health.

Step 2: Moisturize and Hydrate

Moisturizing is key to keeping your skin hydrated and balanced. And contrary to the belief that oily skin doesn't need hydration - it most certainly does!  The idea behind moisturizing is to create a healing environment for skin.

Oily skin: Use a water-based lightweight moisturizer that won't leave you feeling greasy or clog your pores.
Dry skin: Choose a rich, moisturizer to lock in moisture and repair your skin barrier.
Combination skin: Opt for something lightweight.  As with the cleansers if you feel the moisturizer isn't cutting it for your dry areas apply a richer moisturizer.

Step 3: Apply Sunscreen Every Morning

Sunscreen is non-negotiable! Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays prevents premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and other skin concerns. Make sunscreen a daily habit, even on cloudy days.

Pro Tip: Look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

Bonus Step: Customize Your Routine

While these three steps form the core of your skincare routine, it's important to customize it based on your individual needs. Add serums, exfoliants, or even professional treatments as needed to address specific concerns like acne, dark spots, or fine lines.

If you're unsure which products to choose, or how to tailor your skincare routine to your skin type, a virtual skin health consultation can guide you through the process. I can help you discover products that work with your skin, not against it.
