Everything You Need to Know About Oil Cleansing

Everything You Need to Know About Oil Cleansing

Growing up with oily skin and acne, I thought that using products to dry my skin out was the way to get rid of the shiny face look

What I didn't know was those products were stripping away the natural oils on my face and were doing more harm than good.  Unbeknownst to me at the time, your skin produces an oily substance (referred to as sebum) that protects it from drying out.

So I was playing tug-o-war with my skin as it was over-producing oils and working on overdrive to compensate for the oils I was desperately trying to do away with.  Of course, I know better now and I'm sharing everything there is to know about oil cleansing, including its benefits and how to use the oil cleansing method.

What is Oil Cleansing?

Oil cleansing is a method of using natural oils to dissolve buildup, grime and draw out impurities such as sebum and pollutants.  Based on the principle that like dissolves like, oil cleansing takes on the heavy lifting to deeply penetrate without compromising your skin's barrier.

The Benefits of Oil Cleansing

Cleansing with oils has tons of benefits for the skin.  It prevents the buildup of sebum (oil) and bacteria which helps fight acne occurrences.  The buildup of oils causes infections that lead to acne.  Using cleansing oils is excellent at removing dirt, residue, makeup, and even oils.  So if you need a preventive measure to cut down oil-related breakouts, using a cleansing oil is a safe route to go.

Additionally, any other products you use are able to penetrate the skin better because your pores are cleaner and prepared to soak in serums and moisturizers.

Lastly, if you have dry or sensitive skin you can particularly benefit as it cleanses without stripping the skin all while leaving behind some moisture.

How to Oil Cleanse

Step OneApply cleansing oil into the palms of your hands and massage it onto dry skin.  Gently massage the cleanser for a minute using your fingertips to help break down oils and toxins.  Don't forget to enjoy the process - think of it as a mini facial.

Step Two: Take a warm washcloth to wipe away impurities.

Step Three: Gently wipe away with the washcloth and repeat if necessary (especially if wearing makeup) until you have removed all the excess oil from the skin.

Step Four: Follow up with total hydration of toner to balance the skin's pH, a serum to deeply hydrate, and a moisturizer to lock everything in.
